Can I do a short triathlon without wetsuit?

Question by Eugene: Can I do a short triathlon without wetsuit?
I do not have a wetsuit and need to do a short triathlon. Total swim will be around 600m. Will it be ok if I do it only in my cycle clothing? Do they allow it or is it only to help with the coldness and the flow of the water?

This will only be done once so I do not want to go and buy a wetsuit and only use it once.

Wetsuit Gloves Help You Warm Your Hands

Wetsuit Gloves Help You Warm Your Hands
The individual components of a scuba diving outfit come together to form one cohesive unit when submerged in the water. As such, you would think that most people would consider each component to be equally important. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. Most people just don’t think about their wetsuit gloves at all. Many people even consider them to be optional. This is unfortunate since this humble and inexpensive accessory really does so much for the user.

Protection from sharp objects is not something that should be neglected. Scuba divers frequently encounter such items while in the water such as fish hooks from stray fishing line, sharp objects on wrecks, and other dangerous items. By wearing wetsuit gloves, divers can have a layer of protection from these objects. This is something that should not be ignored.

Those who enjoy scuba diving, even if they just go once per year, should definitely be extra vigilant about . . . → Read More: Wetsuit Gloves Help You Warm Your Hands

The All-Around Wetsuit

The All-Around Wetsuit

Article by Anthony Howard

The short sleeved and legging wetsuit is very versatile for water sports and is affectionately known as the “shorty wetsuit”. These wetsuits are all-around wetsuits intended for briefer periods in the water or warmer environments.

Most short length wetsuits are about 1 mm to 3 mm thick. Some suits also have a thicker middle section and a thinner limb area. This might be called a 3/2 mm, which means 3 mm thick in the body and 2 mm thickness in the short sleeves and legs. This different design gives more freedom of movement for in the water such as body boarding or open water swimming.

Short length wetsuits can be used for snorkeling, scuba diving and free diving in warmer waters or for shorter lengths of time. Generally a full length suit would be worn for longer periods underwater or deeper depths. In the right conditions, nearly every water sport can make use of the shorty as . . . → Read More: The All-Around Wetsuit

Does this sound like a fair price for a used wetsuit for surfing?

Question by Semi-Charmed Life: Does this sound like a fair price for a used wetsuit for surfing?
I’m considering buying a wetsuit from a friend. It’s an Xcel wetsuit, 4/3mm, Med. Tall. It’s two years old and has only been worn 20 or so times, supposedly in great condition.

Will that be warm enough for California’s central coast?
I am a Med. Tall size by the way.

Answer by Chang Jdepends how good of a friend the person is. Market values is about 100-175 for a 4/3. But if you were my friend I would give it to you or just make you buy me lunch a couple times.

Can I use a ski wetsuit for my first tri?

Question by drose: Can I use a ski wetsuit for my first tri?
I am gonna be doing a olympic distance tri with a one mile open swim next month and my father in law gave me a ski wetsuit it seems alot bulkier then the tri wetsuits but I can’t spend $ 200+ on something I’ll use once.

Best answer:

Answer by thinkerswYes you can use it. Just know that it will slow you down more than a tri suit would. Many places will rent you a triathlon suit. Also, look on Amazon and craig’s list for good deals. I bought my husband a tri suit at the local running store. It was used and cost way less than a new one. Good luck

Whats The Difference Between A Wetsuit And A Drysuit?

Question by Chris L.: Whats The Difference Between A Wetsuit And A Drysuit?
Because I Live In Southern California and im planning to continue surfing in like october and november and i have a 3/4 wetsuit and the waters going to be like 60 degrees is that ok? o by the way my wetsuit is a 3/4 2.3 millimeter and i was wondering whats the diffrence between a wetsuit and drysuit also

Best answer:

Answer by CamA drysuit basically gives the body thermal insulation instead of retaining water and using body heat to warm the water inside the suit, like the wetsuit does. Drysuits are most useful in water conditions that are less than 15 degrees C, in which a person using a wetsuit would tend to get discomfort when in the water for too long. A drysuit allows from a person to be immersed in cold water for a longer amount of time that a wetsuit.

Techniques to keep warm in cold water without wetsuit or clothing?

Question by TSmith: Techniques to keep warm in cold water without wetsuit or clothing?
Im doing the Long Beach Polar Bear Splash tomorrow which involves running into the freezing waters of the NY atlantic in only my boardshorts. Are there anyways to keep a little warmer than doing it in only a bathing suit? Ex. does vasaline work (alright lets keep it mature about the vasaline)? NOT involving any form of clothing/wetsuit or any other largely visable technique. answers appreciated

Answer by g_steedAcclimatization! Wet your skin at the beach before plunging into the water. A spot of vigorous exercise will get blood to all parts of your body to promote warming. Cold water (hypothermia) will kill. There are tables available noting allowable times in water at various temperatures. Moving water cools quicker than quiet water. Plan your entrance and exit. Cold water can shock! Have a dry towel ready for use when you exit. Evaporating water will still . . . → Read More: Techniques to keep warm in cold water without wetsuit or clothing?

Answer by Aquaplay ScotlandHello Amy, I would have thought that the rafting company would provide you with a wet suit. Aquaplay Scotland provides 5mm steamers for all of our customers. Whilst wearing layers is an alternative it will be nowhere near as efficient as a wet suit. I suggest you look to purchase a second hand wet suit which can be sold on again easily after you have had your use from it. I also suggest you wear a wind proof jacket . . . → Read More: What is the best thing to wear whitewater rafting(other than a wetsuit)?

Want to go Surfing ? Grab a Wetsuit

Want to go Surfing ? Grab a Wetsuit

Some people surf without wetsuits but this is a dangerous thing to do. For a start, a wetsuit will stop you from getting sunburned while you spend hours out in cold water and don’t even notice you are getting burned. And it will also protect you from getting too cold if the weather turns chilly. How does it do this?

A surfing wetsuit is made of neoprene. It is not waterproof, but lets a thin layer of water in underneath that is then trapped between the neoprene and your skin. Your body heat can warm this water up and the neoprene ensures it stays warm, so you feel warm no matter how chilly the water or the weather is. Of course, cold water can still enter the wetsuit to ruin your warmth and this happens as you move suddenly, so it is imperative that it fits as well as . . . → Read More: Want to go Surfing ?
