Questions about first triathlon?

Question by Dave D: Questions about first triathlon?
I am running my first triathlon this summer. It’s a sprint triathlon so that’s 0.25 mile swim, 10 mile bike, and 3.1 run. I have a few questions. What are the transition zones like? What should I wear? The website said that wetsuits are not permitted, and I don’t want to spend a fortune on tri-suits. Would a swim brief work for most of it?
Thanks in advance,

Can anyone give me pointers for my first Sprint Triathlon?

Question by WorkingClassHero: Can anyone give me pointers for my first Sprint Triathlon?
I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me since I’ll be participating in my first Spring Triathlon in little over a month. I’ve been trying for it (probably not as much as I should have), but I’m already in pretty good shape. Unfortunately, I haven’t really began training for the swim, which I found to be the most difficult part. Due to financial difficulties, I do no have a bike, therefore I tend to use the bike at my local gym. I understand that this may hurt me when it come to actually biking in the event, but I believe that as long as I can get m cardio up with the bike and run, I should be fine.

I was wondering about correct clothing for the event. I see that many people wear their wetsuits, and have compression shorts on underneath, which allows for easy transitions. Is . . . → Read More: Can anyone give me pointers for my first Sprint Triathlon?

Triathlon question- wetsuit?

Question by Kirby: Triathlon question- wetsuit?
I posted this in the Swimming section, but I didn’t get any answers

I’m signed up for a sprint tri. The water temp will be between 63-73. Should I bother with a wetsuit, since it’s so short?

Best answer:

Answer by RobinIf you are a beginner swimmer, the wetsuit offers increase flotation, security and peace of mind. It costs you less than a minute in T1.

What kind of triathlon wetsuit should I get?

Question by armanisk8r: What kind of triathlon wetsuit should I get?
I’ve been doing tri’s for about 4 years. I have a VERY old QR wetsuit with long sleeves that was given to me shortly after i started doing tri’s. It has all kinds of holes and stitches in it and I think it is time to buy new one. I want to know what suit has the best bang for the buck. I usually only race in the Southeast and race anything from several sprints to a couple of 70.3′s a season. I’m thinking about getting a sleeveless one because i never race in anything too cold. I also want to buy it online because it is 1000x cheaper, so any product site would be appreciated. Why doesn’t Yahoo Answers have a triathlon section?

Answer by hummerhead2002You may find a triathlon outfit from coloradocyclist.com or just look for it at EBAY.com ( Category-Outdoor Sports\Triathlon apparel and equipment).

Did anyone experience breathlessness in” Open Water Swimming!!”?

Question by Mr. Yahoo Fedup: Did anyone experience breathlessness in” Open Water Swimming!!”?
Hi All,

I took part in a sprint triathlon and open water swim was a must.
The water was extremely cold. We jumped in the water to acclimatise our bodies with the temperature. despite having done 3 similar triathlons before and team relay ironman, I struggled to finish the swim and exerted 3 times as much efforts and time. Ran out of breath but managed to finish the entire race. later on I
was wheezing badly the whole night and it’s really affecting my performance and confidence. The problem is the compression combined with the colder water as once I’m out or in a normal pool I’m absolutely fine.
My GP diagnosed me with “Exercise Induced Asthma” and put me on Asthmavent “reliever” blue salbutamol inhaler.

Any tips please on controlling asthma during open water swimming when wearing a wetsuit?!!
Thank you both for the lovely feed back. really took that on board. Casey, I . . . → Read More: Did anyone experience breathlessness in” Open Water Swimming!!”?

What apparel do women wear for Triathlons?

Question by DJ Nicole: What apparel do women wear for Triathlons?
I’ve never done a triathlon but I’ve always been interested in doing one. I am looking into the Santa Cruz sprint tri on September 27th because it has shorter distances: 400m swim, 11 mile bike, 2.5 mile run.

I really don’t want to spend a fortune on clothing for the race, but I realize that you do get what you pay for. I know the waters will be pretty cold around 62 degrees so Im not sure if I should get a wetsuit. I’d probably prefer a top and bike shorts to be more comfortable throughout the entire race and prevent chaffing.

So with that in mind please let me know what you recommend for a first-timer. Also, I’d prefer to purchase from a local sporting goods store since you can’t try on things online.

Thanks in Advanced!

Please help choose a triathlon wet suit!?

Question by Joe1224: Please help choose a triathlon wet suit!?
I’m looking to do my second triathlon here in a couple of months and am having a hard time picking out a good wetsuit. I want something that will last, as I planning on doing many more, but don’t want to spend a ton of money at this time. I plan on doing sprints, never to exceed 1/2 mi ocean swim. Swimming is my weakest leg, so I want something with great buoyancy and will help out as much as possible. Please help with choosing from the following: (open to better suggestions)

Orca Apex 2 2008 (CLEARANCE) for $ 398USD
Zoot Sports Fuzion FS WetZoot 2009
Orca Men’s Sonar
Orca Men’s Equip.

Thanks!!

Answer by Michael HYou seem to have a pretty good handle on what you need already. Clearly you need buoyancy especially in the legs and lots of flexibility in the shoulders.

Answer by Eric H. DossHey David, Congrats on signing up for your first tri. Don’t worry too much about all the details, just get out there and have a good time. That being said, there are a few things you can do to prepare.
First, I’d recommend joining BeginnerTriathlete and using the forums for most of your questions.
Second, purchase a pair of tri shorts. These are basically swim briefs or trunks with a bit more padding in the crotch for comfort on the ride.

How does she change when doing triathlon?

Question by tazzababz: How does she change when doing triathlon?
My 11 year old sister is an athlete (fell running, track, gymnastics etc) and she is soon entering her first triathlon. she wants to know what is most suitable for her to wear, as she’d rather not wear her swimming costume for some reason.
Does she have to wear one?
I’d rather she wore this than a wetsuit as people have told me that she would stay wet all the time, and it would drag her down a bit when she is running.
Would it be a good idea for her to swim in her bathing suit, then keep it on – just put her trainers on for bke and running?
or wear her bathing suit, then pull a pair of shorts on as well as her trainers?
I have no clue, any suggestions and nice comments are great!!!!!
Thanks!!!!
